90's Grunge Makeup...

When you hear Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana what does it make you think of?

Grunge...

The early 1990's saw a rise in so-called grunge music, bringing with it a "grunge" look. Generally it meant disheveled and earthy looks - lots of plaid button down shirts, dirty jeans, stringy hair with obvious dark roots. And really cool makeup!

Heavy eye makeup was applied to create deep sunken in eyes. Girls often paired this either with a really nude lip (which coined the phrase heroin chic) or with a dark heavy dark burgundy (more of a goth inspired look.) This type of look is still one of my favorites - hence the reason I threw together this pictorial showing all you beauties how to achieve the exact same look! It takes minimal products and only a few brushes. In this pictorial I am doing the eyes first - doing this helps with any fallout from my shadows and makes clean up a bit easier.

So let's get started....

First off as always start with a hydrated face...
Start with a matte mid tone brown shadow and run that through your crease using wind shield wiper motions...

Take another matte brown shadow, in a deeper shade and run that along the crease blending down onto the lid...
As well as blending it down under you lower lash line - essentially creating a circle around your entire eye; you might feel like you look a little ill at this point but no worries, it will come together in the end...

Take a black kohl pencil and lightly run that along your upper lash line, using short strokes...
Then take a flat shader brush and blend a matte black shadow along that line flicking upwards to blend...
Use an even darker matte brown shade and apply that to your lid blending the black shadow to the mid tone brown you used earlier - as well as blending on your lower lash line...

Apply a few generous coats of mascara and lightly fill in your brows...

Apply your foundation and any concealer that you might need and set with a matte powder that matches your skin tone...

(I forgot to add - tight line your upper and lower lash line with the kohl pencil from earlier)

Using a matte bronzer lightly contour your cheeks blending out so there are no obvious lines...use a light hand for this - overly defined cheek bones were not
trendy back in the 90's...

Line your lips with a medium to dark burgundy lip liner and softly powder to get a matte finish...
Apply a deep dark burgundy lipstick of your choice...

And you are done!

I would love your feedback about this type of pictorial...if you guys like it I will be sure to do more! And if you have a specific look you would like me to create please be sure to leave it in the comments!

Happy Wednesday my beauties!
